- Chicago Police Marine Unit officers had just finished a training dive several miles out on Lake Michigan when they got a call about 4:30 p.m. to respond to a female trespasser who had made it out to the Locks separating the Chicago River from Lake Michigan.
Still donning their water suits, the officers sped in their marine boats and put that training to use when they saw the 24-year-old woman in nothing but her underwear. The woman seemed noticeably upset and appeared ready to jump into the water, officers said.
"It was nice that we came from that training dive because everything was on and we were all ready to go," said Marine Unit Officer Leticia Kaner.
The woman did in fact jump and Officer Kaner went right in after her, dragging her to the boat with the assistance of other officers and then holding down the distraught woman until they could get her to shore and medical help. A very nice bit of work.
