St. Baldrick's Registration Open
Time to let the hair grow out a bit:
- Registration is open for all three 2013 CPD St. Baldrick's locations so start letting that hair grow! Just go to THIS LINK RIGHT HERE and choose from the Academy, Area South for 022 and Area North for 025. Follow the link on the left "participate in this event" and you will be walked through the registration process whether it's your first year or you're returning. Any questions don't hesitate to reach out to me, chromedome1269@sbcglobal.net. Our event is on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 0700 - 1700 hours and we're hoping to break a record for the number of participants this year so please invite a friend or family member to join you.

McMoron Says What?
Nothing like keeping that tongue firmly planted in Rahm's sphincter while dozens of families prepare to bury their dead:
- Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says a meaningful response to the Connecticut school shooting, and shootings everywhere, would be to hold gun owners more accountable.
“Its got to stop,” McCarthy said. “People are going to have to wake up.”
- McCarthy said that there has to be a national recognition that there has to be some sort of tracking and if gun owners were required to report the loss, theft or transfer of firearms, shootings would not occur on the scale that they are today.
Guns are often legally purchased, McCarthy said, and then illegally transferred and used in crimes.
Because what happened in Connecticut was a complete failure of existing gun laws. Let's see...
- MSNBC is reporting that the assassin attempted to buy a rifle just last week, but was denied purchase for an as yet unknown reason.
Gee, that seems like the existing gun laws worked just fine.
- All of the guns were legally purchased and we suppose, properly registered, by the mother of the murderer.
So McMoron is laying the blame at her feet for not reporting her guns stolen. Of course, the fact that she was lying in her home dead, the first victim of the madman's spree, doesn't seem to make an impression on the Streetlight Marksman.
If it wasn't for the circumstances surrounding this entire episode, it would be amusingly ironic to see the pretzels that the anti-gunners are twisting themselves into, seeing as how this was akindergarten school teacher divorced mother of a handicapped man who owned not one, two or three legal firearms, but at least five. As it is, we can only shake our heads that improperly secured firearms in the presence of a mentally disturbed individual ended up being the tool with which he performed his mindless evil.

- Special Request for Christmas Cards
A friend of mine that is a life-saving crew member in Bedford County emailed me a request and asked for our help within the State Police family.
There is a 5 year old boy from Rustburg, Virginia that is dying of terminal cancer and he might not live to see Christmas, His special request is to receive Christmas cards from police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel.
I would appreciate if you could take a few minutes our of your busy schedule and grant Nathan's wish by sending him a card.

St. Baldricks - Shave the Date!
That hair is looking a bit shaggy boys and gals:
- Once again, the St. Baldrick's Organization has requested the assistance of the men and women of the Chicago Police Department in 2013. For those unfamiliar, St. Baldrick's is an organization that raises money that goes towards research of a cure for childhood cancer. Participants agree to shave their heads in support of the kids who lose their hair in chemo treatments, and seek pledges for doing so. Participants with longer hair are also able to donate hair longer than 12" to be used by "Locks of Love" or other organizations to make wigs for the patients that do lose their hair.
Save the date, the 2013 event will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Training Academy , Area 5, and 022. Last year we surpassed a total $500,000 raised in just five years to help fund research to find a cure for a disease that personally affects so many of us. Thank you for your continued support and efforts!
Our goal this year is to get over 350 participants for the first time. Please encourage any friends and families to join us this year and be a part of helping this great cause.
Details and a link to sign up will be out shortly but for those follicly challenged like me, I wanted to get word out as soon as possible so you can let your hair hang low.

Kilt Run Saturday
Final reminder:
- This year's Chicago Kilt Run benefits the Police Chaplains Ministry and the Fire Chaplains Ministry.
Starting at 10:00 a.m. this Saturday from Trinity Pub at 5943 N. Northwest Hwy in Chicago, come run / walk 5K through Norwood Park with countless folks dressed in traditional kilts. (If you don't own a kilt, don't worry! Any outfit is fine.)
Party continues all day and into the evening with bands, food and other entertainment right back at the pub.
This event, while held in/outside of Trinity Pub, IS FAMILY FRIENDLY with kids' attractions, kid-friendly food and soft drinks, face painting, and clowns like Sgt. Neal McLoughlin strolling around.
Hope you can make it for at least part of the festivities!

Remembering Officer Mike Jakob
On December 30th 2011, a tragedy struck the Jakob family. Officer Mike Jakob of the 22nd District suffered from a heart attack and passed away in his Mt. Greenwood home at the age of 52. He leaves behind his wife and 4 children. Mike was the sole supporter of his family, his wife Theresa is hearing impaired and is unable to find steady employment. Prior to Mike working in the 22nd District he worked in the 6th, 7th, and 8th District Gang Team.
We are " REMEMBERING MIKE" by having a benefit for the family at:

Lollapalooza Evacuation
There is supposedly an "evacuation plan" in existence if the need ever arose to safely get thousands of people out of Grant Park in a hurry. The decision was made Saturday evening to get concert-goers out of the park due to storms, lightening, high winds, etc, but reports from the scene describe mass chaos, no direction, no efforts to direct people to the underground garages and the like to wait out the weather.
Anyone working that as an overtime initiative want to speak up and tell the world about it?
And today, Grant Park looked like a bomb hit with all the grass and landscaping destroyed. How many millions is that going to cost?

Ride to Remember
Took place on a beautiful Sunday:
Motorcyclists and bicyclists are both participating in rides today to honor and remember Chicago police officers who died in the line of duty.
This morning, the Ride to Remember kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Harrison District Police Headquarters, 3151 W. Harrison St., and heads to the Gold Star Families Memorial across from Soldier Field. The ride was started as an annual event in 2005 by detectives from what was then Area 4, the Harrison Police Area, as a fundraiser for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, according to organizers.
This year, about 1,000 motorcycle riders were expected to participate.
And the associated bike event:
- This afternoon at 1:30 p.m., the Pedal for the Police ride, also benefiting the foundation, starts at from Chicago Police Headquarters, in conjunction with a long-distance bike ride sponsored by the Illinois Concerns of Police Survivors, the Cycle Across Illinois. The bike event also will end at the memorial.

Taste Numbers Up
Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday proclaimed his shrunken and revamped Taste of Chicago a success and said he plans to do more of the same next year.
By cutting the Taste in half, bumping it to mid-July and charging for concert seats at the Petrillo bandshell, Emanuel led some people to fear he was trying to kill the premier summer festival that had become a drain on Chicago taxpayers.
Those fears turned out to be unfounded.
Overall, attendance was 1.2 million or an average of 240,000 for each of the five days.
That’s up 5,000-a-day from last year’s draw of 2.35 million over five days, which was down 11 percent from 2010 and 37.5 percent from the event’s 2006 and 2007 heyday.
Restaurant revenues for the 2012 Taste were not yet known.
Last year, the 59 participating restaurants made $4.9 million — 20 percent less than the year before.
We're sure they'll release those numbers in a few weeks when it won't really matter and no one is paying attention.
On the police side though, there is word that on two of the days of Taste, there were actually zero arrests for anything, an unheard of occurrence. Maybe we can get another ribbon if it went that well.
Taste Up, Taste Down
- The scaled-back Taste of Chicago wraps up Sunday, and the question many people are asking is whether the changes in the festival have made the experience more enjoyable or less.
After losing money for three years Taste of Chicago was moved to after Independence Day and shortened from ten days to five.
According to figures provided to vendors, sales were down 100,000 tickets on Wednesday compared to the Wednesday of last year's festival.
But Thursday saw an increase of 150,000 tickets over the Thursday of Taste 2011.
Apples and oranges as the Wednesday and Thursday they are comparing last year led into a four day weekend for the 4th. But a swing of a quarter million tickets is pointless without a baseline to compare it to.
The big number coming out though is zero killed.
What If We Say "Pretty Please?"
It's like they're reading from a script - a script we wrote with the assistance of our readers two or three years ago:
- Chicago's extensive efforts to reinvigorate its convention and tourism industries could be damaged unless the city quickly defuses the violent crime wave that has exploded in its neighborhoods and nicked the downtown, the city's top convention and tourism official said Wednesday.
"We hope this sunsets quickly because all the good work we're doing regionally, nationally and internationally, if this is not contained in a reasonable period of time, it will have an impact," Don Welsh, president and chief executive officer of Choose Chicago, said in a morning meeting with the Chicago Tribune's editorial board.
News reports of several unprovoked attacks by youths in the Michigan Avenue corridor and of the surge in murders in some impoverished Chicago neighborhoods are triggering concerned calls to Choose Chicago, the newly restructured not-for-profit agency that combines the city's convention bureau and its office of tourism and culture. The issue has gained national attention in the New York Times and other media.
Rumor has it a lid is going to be thrown on the Taste this year. No one gets shot or else.
Taste on the Verge of Failure
The revenue-strapped City of Chicago is for the first time charging admission for the best seats at Taste of Chicago main-stage concerts, but sales have been slow so far.
With Taste scheduled to start next week, nearly two-thirds of the $25 pavilion seats remain available to see Jennifer Hudson (Wednesday), Death Cab for Cutie (Thursday), Michael Franti (July 13), Chaka Khan (July 14) and Dierks Bentley (July 15) at the Petrillo Band Shell in Grant Park. Of 15,000 pavilion seats (3,000 per concert), 5,637 had been sold as of Thursday, the city reports.
Taste’s duration was cut in half this year as part of budget belt-tightening by the city, which has lost money on summer festivals in recent years.
The kool-aid is flowing hot and heavy at City Hall though:
“All in all, for a first-time venture, we're pleased with the response thus far,” said city spokesman Cindy Gatziolis. “The idea was to create a new experience at Taste - a guaranteed seat in the pavilion.”
She expects sales to pick up in the next week because “we know that a lot of people wait until about a week out to make a decision on whether or not they are coming to the festival.”
