- Get ready Chicago. We’re only three months away from the international G8 and NATO meetings taking place here in Chicago this May. In preparation for the usually violent G8 conference – a meeting of the 8 wealthiest nations in the world – local police have been training and upgrading their equipment. Two local media exposes however, have begged the questions; what exactly are they training for, what kind of equipment will they be getting, and will they receive either in time to make a difference.
From May 18-22, Chicago will be a closed city with thousands of powerful world leaders walking our streets. First, the G8 Summit will take place, immediately followed the next day by the NATO meeting. To give readers an indication of just how precedent-setting this meeting is, it will be the first time ever that NATO has met in a US city other than Washington DC. Federal authorities have already confirmed that they intend to put parts of downtown under military martial law for three days, albeit using slightly less threatening terminology. The Feds will also have thousands of heavily-armed military personnel controlling the area, as well as thousands of additional invisible Federal agents mingling among the crowds.
