Twelve protesters were arrested Wednesday evening after a scuffle with police on Michigan Avenue at Ohio Street that left five officers injured.
One of the twelve - Gary C. Wagaman, a 30-year-old Michigan resident - is charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer and is expected in criminal court Thursday, police said. Wagaman tossed a frying pan at police, striking one of the members of the bike unit in the head, police said.
The protesters were using pots and pans to make noise, police said. The officer was wearing a helmet when it hit him in the head, police said. Police said that Wagaman touched off the skirmish that led to the other 11 arrests, as others in the group tried to stop police from getting to Wagaman.
This even sounds like a confession of law breaking:
Some protesters were arrested in the street, but officers arrested other group leaders on the sidewalk after the situation had “settled,” said the protesters, who claim officers used batons and physical force.
“We were vying for the street when they started pushing us over the curb and pushing us down,” said Daniel Goering, 18, of Evanston. “Arrests started happening and everything got tense.
"...vying for the street..." You don't get the street. It isn't yours.
These people are injuring police officers. With weapons. Game over. They aren't protestors any more. They are criminals and hooligans.
