- Attorneys defending the city of Chicago in a federal lawsuit stemming from the infamous 2007 beating of a female bartender by an off-duty police officer today rested their case, setting the scene for closing arguments on Tuesday.
Witnesses called by the city challenged key assertions by lawyers for the bartender, Karolina Obrycka, that higher-ranking officers obtained misdemeanor charges in a bid to minimize Abbate’s conduct and that the city has an abysmal record of disciplining officers for excessive force.
Obrycka’s lawsuit blames the department’s unofficial code of silence for the beating at Jesse’s Short Stop Inn and the alleged coverup that followed. After a videotape of the beating was made public and went viral, the Police Department underwent a firestorm of criticism.
The Department doesn't have "an abysmal record of disciplining officers for excessive force." What this Department has is ZERO consistency in discipline that it can fall back on to show that it handles complaints appropriately at any point in time. Time after time after time, the politically connected lead charmed lives and escape any sort of responsibility for their actions. Then they end up promoted in positions of power and excuse others doing the same crap they did, regardless of it being illegal, unethical or just plain stupid.
