- The latest cold spell is expected to come to an abrupt end this weekend with temperatures in the 80s -- prompting the National Weather Service to warn that the sudden change could spawn tornadoes.
"Concern is growing that a widespread and potentially significant severe weather outbreak, including the potential for tornadoes, is possible somewhere in the Midwest or Great Lakes region Sunday afternoon and evening," the weather service said in a statement.
While the weather service is forecasting highs in the lower 80s Sunday, WGN-TV's Tom Skilling predicts it could top out at 88 degrees, close to the record high of 90 degrees set in 1930.
