We've heard this rumor for years now.
We've had readers post it at various times during the life of the blog.
It's never really been politically viable in the recent past. But now?
We've gotten a few e-mails in the past few days that hint it might be back on the front burner again. The power-that-be are willing to take the short term political hit to save tens of millions in operating the actual physical buildings and potentially tens of millions more in eliminated exempt spots, inside spots and the paper savings of eliminating the resultant "vacancies."
Frankly, we agree with closing 021 and re-districting would eliminate at least one north side district - 013 makes sense. It also puts CPD well on the way to McCarthy's vision of a 9,000 man department - it's been overheard at CompStat meetings that "Houston does it, so why can't Chicago?"
Now how about driving a stake through the heart of the CAPS vampire? McCarthy would be well on his way to Rahm's $190 million in "savings."
