A former Chicago police officer was sentenced Monday to two years in federal prison for steering work to tow truck drivers in exchange for cash bribes.
James Wodnicki, 50, is the sixth Chicago cop sentenced to prison or probation as part of an FBI probe code-named Operation Tow Scam, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Donovan. Another officer's case is pending. The investigation exposed how Chicago police regularly extorted cash payoffs from tow truck drivers to steer business to them at crash sites.
Three tow truck drivers also were convicted as a result of the investigation.
