The shooting erupted around 11 p.m. in the 6700 block of South Blackstone Avenue in the Grand Crossing neighborhood and touched off a chaotic scene as scores of officers, police dogs and a helicopter swarmed the area looking for the gunman, who remained at-large this morning, authorities said.

The incident began with officers witnessing an armed man firing shots in the 11000 block of South Avenue M just after 2 a.m., police said in a statement.
The gunman fled the scene in a vehicle with officers in pursuit. During the chase, the suspect's vehicle struck a squad car assisting in the pursuit, police said.
At some point during the pursuit, the gunman got out of his vehicle and was shot in the leg by an officer, police said. He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital for treatment, police said.
